Dr. Martin King is Clinical Assistant Professor of Horn and Music Education at Washington State University. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from James Madison University, and his Masters Degree in Horn Performance from the University of Alabama. He completed his D.M.A. in Horn Performance at Alabama in 2016.
Dr. King has a wide-ranging playing and teaching career across the United States and around the world. As a founding member of the Pan-Pacific Ensemble, King is involved in commissioning and performing the work of Southeast Asian and American composers around the Pacific Rim. The ensemble has performed at the China ASEAN Music Week in Nanning, China and at the Thailand International Composition Festival at the Mahidol Conservatory in Thailand. The Pan Pacific Ensemble is in demand at the major new music Festivals in Southeast Asia. The Pan-Pacific Ensemble's first CD will be published in 2017. The ensemble has commissioned composers such as Narong Prangcharoen, Chaipruk Mekara, Yii Kah Hoe, P.Q. Phan, Kenji Bunch, and Nick Omiccioli. In addition, Dr.King currently performs in the WSU Faculty Brass Quintet, the Crimson Low Brass Trio and the Solstice Quintet, the faculty woodwind quintet at WSU. King has performed as a soloist with the Saigon Wind Ensemble in Ho Chi Minh City, at the Southeast Horn Workshop, the Northwest Horn Workshop, the College Music Society Northwest Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, with the Mississippi State Chorale, and at a variety of universities across the country. His debut solo CD, Solitary Freedom, was published in October 2016 on WSU Records, a peer-reviewed record label. In this album, Dr. King records some of the standard works for solo horn.
Dr. King maintains an active orchestral schedule. He is currently co-principal horn in the Washington Idaho Symphony and performs with the Spokane, Yakima, Mid-Columbia, and Walla Walla Symphonies. Dr. King has performed as principal horn with the Guangxi Symphony Orchestra to open the China ASEAN Music Week in 2016. He held the position principal horn with the Starkville Symphony and has performed with the North Mississippi Symphony, Gadsden Symphony, and Tuscaloosa Symphony. He formerly played with the Waynesboro Symphony from 2008-2011. An avid promoter of new music, Dr. King had been involved in the commissioning and premiering of new works for wind quintet with the Pan-Pacific ensemble. King recently helped premier the new work "My Way, and How. . ." by Amir Zaheri at the 2015 Southeast Horn Workshop. Dr. King has also premiered Simple Music No. 2 for Woodwind Quintet in 2014 and Douglas McConnell's "Pied Beauty" for horn and choir in 2015 with the State Singers of Mississippi State University. His reviews and writings have appeared in the Horn Call and in the program of the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra.
Upon graduation from James Madison University, he took a position teaching middle and high school band in Alleghany County, Virginia. In addition to directing the middle school bands and assisting with the high school band program, King also maintained a large private horn studio. Before coming to Washington State, Mr. King taught horn at Mississippi State University, and he served as a teaching assistant at the University of Alabama in horn and musicology. At Washington State, Dr. King teaches horn lessons and horn studio, coordinates the Instrumental Music Education Area, teaches music education classes, and supervises student teachers and practicum students. As a musician with a passion for music education, King maintains an active schedule as a clinician and adjudicator in an effort to support the wonderful work of music educators.
Dr. King's primary teachers are Abigail Pack and Charles "Skip" Snead. He also studied with John McGuire and has played in masterclasses with Eric Ruske and Richard Sebring. King is a member of Phi Kappa Lambda, the College Music Society, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the International Horn Society.
